Amonkhet Preview Season

Gideon from the Planeswalker Decks of Amonkhet

[pix_dropcap]P[/pix_dropcap]review season for Amonkhet is upon us! So far two of my illustrations for Amonkhet have been previewed. For the latest previews, take a look at

Gideon, Martial Paragon

The first is Gideon, Martial Paragon. From my understanding, he will only be in the Planeswalker Deck and not in the main set.

When the first preview appeared, some people freaked out about the green armor. The reason the armor looks green in the preview image is because they posted a picture of the foil card, so at certain angles the armor will look green. If you take a look at the picture posted on, you can see the real color. So don’t worry, his armor isn’t actually green!

Back in October of 2015 I was commissioned to create 10 illustrations in 15 days of some pivotal story moments. Due to the short amount of time, these illustrations were in black and white. The initial concept push had already been completed, so I was working from those designs. Some elements hadn’t been concepted yet or weren’t finalized, so I had to concept them while I created my illustrations.

It was fun, and challenging, to create cinematic story illustrations for an entire block. Usually concept pushes only involve single concepts, so this was very different. The illustrations were only used internally and weren’t even used for the style guide, so I’m not sure if they will ever see the light of day. Maybe I’ll be able to post them after Hour of Devastation has been released. We shall see. I do know that several of my story illustrations were used as a guide for actual illustrations, so they may have sent them out individually when they commissioned the artists.

The Nope Desert

The second image is of a bunch of undead rising from the sand. The actual card hasn’t been previewed, so I have no idea what it does.

When I was watching The Walking Dead, Season 7, there was an episode (6, I think?) where a bunch of zombies crawled out of a pile of sand. As soon as I saw that I thought “oh man, that would have been perfect reference.” Unfortunately I had already finished my illustration back in April of 2016 while the Walking Dead episode didn’t air until November.
