Intro to Digital Painting is in the Can!

Screen Shot 2013-09-14 at 8.41.00 AMAfter two months of painting and filming, I finally finished all of the videos for my Intro to Digital Painting class!

That means the class is going to start now right? Well, not immediately. I have some on-site concept work I have to do, so I won’t be able to start the class until after I return. The starting date for the Intro to Digital Painting class is October 18, 2013.

There will be a one week vacation for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so the class will run through mid-January. If things run smoothly, the next Intro to Digital Painting class should start right after the first one ends. Expect the second class to start either January 31 or February 7, 2014.

The advanced class is still up in the air. I have only filmed one demo so far, which means it will probably take me another 2 months to film the rest. I’m also not sure I’ll have time to film the advanced class demos while I’m teaching the intro class, so I really have no idea when the advanced class will start. I wouldn’t expect it to start until February or April 2014 at the earliest.

If it turns out that I can’t film the advanced class while I teach the intro class, I might have to delay the start of the second intro class.

I have some stats that people might be interested in. Now don’t be confused about the working file sizes, you won’t need that much disk space. Most of the videos are between 600 MB to 1.5 GB each. I just wanted to show how much disk space I needed in order to film the videos. I actually had to buy an external hard drive to store all of the files, hah!  I think the 12-week course takes up 26.8 GB for just the demos.

I’m still in the process of filming the portfolio reviews for the standard and premium students. Each portfolio review is 15-25 minutes long. I’ll be filming a portfolio review before and after the course. That way people will know how they improved and what they still need to work on.

I’m still waiting to hear back from a few people who had a spot saved in the first intro class. I sent out an e-mail to all of the people on the list for the first intro class, so if you haven’t replied yet, please reply soon or I will have to remove you from the class since there is a waiting list. I’ll send out another e-mail to the students who haven’t replied.

It has been a long journey and the class hasn’t even started, but I’m really excited about the class. Hopefully everyone has fun and learns a lot. I’ll see you in October!

Video Only Tier

There were a few questions about the video only tier, so I will go ahead and address them here.

A portfolio is not required for the video only tier. You only need a portfolio if you are taking the economy, standard, or premium tier. If you purchase the video only tier and then decide to take the full class later on, you will then need to submit a portfolio.

There are no payment plans or discounts for the video only tier. It is a single payment of $250 for the first 10 weeks of the course. That includes 24 videos.

You can purchase the video only tier at any time, you do not need to wait for the class to start. The only problem with purchasing the videos before the class starts is that if you want to post your assignments on the forum, there won’t be anyone there to look at them. Of course you can always wait until the class starts to post your assignments.

I am still in the process of uploading the videos, so you can’t purchase the video only tier just yet. The last video should be finished uploading by tomorrow.

How do you go about purchasing the video only tier? Just send me the payment through Paypal. My Paypal is If the e-mail address associated with your Paypal isn’t your primary e-mail address, be sure to include your e-mail address in the notes section. I will then e-mail you links to the videos.

Why can’t you just purchase the videos through my store? Well, I would then need to upload all 24 videos to a different server. That would quite literally take me another month to upload all of the files since I have a very slow and intermittent internet signal. I might make that an option in the future, but I’m not sure if people want to wait another month. Actually, it would be another two months because I’m leaving for 3 weeks to work on-site at WotC.

  1. Hi Mike,

I’m really interested in taking the classes.

Basically I just want to improve my own art.Obviously all the classes for the 1st class is full up so I would be looking at next years classes if possible.

Is it worth me buying the video tier or waiting and trying to get in the classes next year?
Will the videos be the same?

One other thing could you suggest some ideas of what sort of paintings you would like to see in a portfolio?,I could get some done in time for next years classes.

I just draw for fun and at a pretty low standard if I’m honest, and am not looking to set the art world on fire, just improving my basic skill set would do me fine:)

    • It really depends on what you are looking for. Do you want the paintovers, live chat, etc. or do you only want the videos? Most likely the videos will remain the same each semester. I might be able to change a couple, but I won’t have time to change all of them. It took me 2 months to make these, so that means it will take 4 months per year to make the intro and advanced tutorials for one semester. If I offer a trimester system, that means it will take 12 months per year to make the videos. Obviously that means I won’t have time for my freelance work or anything else, so there just isn’t enough time.

I would like to see some imaginative paintings and some observational paintings. That way I can get a better idea of where you are in terms of anatomy, rendering, etc.

  2. Thanks for the reply.

I just thought i would check,I will hold off on the videos then and try get in the class for next year :)

Thanks again, keep up the great work :)

  3. Hi Daarken,

I’m very Excited for your mentorship. I have already Sent you an email about the first class term and it’s full :( . I’m in the waiting list for the next class next year. But like I said I’m so excited about the mentorship that I think I will buy the video only tier. I have a question, maybe a little dumb question, but if I do the video only tier and In the future Can I do the premium tier? Not in the same class but like other students sending a new portfolio and entering in a new class. It would be a little strange to redo the classes but It’s because the extra classes and the paintover Are so cool and important that I’m worried If I’ll regret about only doing the video only. Resuming the question: Will “video only” users have the chance to do the class as premium users(paying the costs) and entering in the waiting list in a future class? Sorry about the confusing question.
And do you think that will be a way to video only tier pay an extra module to be able to download/see the paintover of the students of the same class? That would be cool to be able to learn with collegues paintings maybe an extra $100 module to be able the painting overs of that class. An extra module pay to users that have already bought the video only tier.

    • Regarding upgrading the “video only” tier to be able to see the paintovers of other students, the economy tier is only $100 more than the video only tier. If you are going to pay $100 more, like you suggested, you might as well just take the economy tier and get paintovers of your own assignments in addition to the paintovers of other students.

If you buy the video only tier and then later on want to take the full class, you can do so. Although a portfolio will be required to take the full class.

I’m not sure if you are asking about getting a discount if you already bought the video only tier and then you decide to take the premium tier at a later date. It really depends on the situation. If the videos remain the same, then we can probably work out a discount. If the videos change with each semester, you will be required to pay the full price because it wouldn’t be fair to get a discount on videos you’ve never seen before.

I hope that answers your questions.

  4. Hi Daarken,

I am interested in joining this class.
Do you have estimation when the next batch would be on?

I want to learn and improve my art from a mentor.
I am wondering how big is the class size?
Is this more like a class setting or of personal mentorship?

    • The next intro class will probably start in January or February of next year. Right now the class size is only 10 people. I do paintovers of every single assignment and we have live chats, so it is fairly personal. Also if you apply for the higher tier, you will receive personal assignments based on what I think you need to work on and what you want to do with your future career.
