Return to Ravnica Part 02
I was planning on just updating my old Return to Ravnica thread, but I thought this might be easier for people to see since not everyone goes back through my old posts.
I actually have 4 cards in the set, but I only posted 3. I really didn’t like how the last card came out, so I’m going to pretend I never painted it :O.
The Ethereal Armor card (the first image) was a bit of a challenge. The brief called for a female character wearing a transparent set of armor and underneath you could see an entirely different outfit. Painting transparent objects can be tricky, so I needed to figure out how to do it.
I decided to paint her outfit underneath the armor first. After I completely painted her outfit, I then started painting the transparent armor on a new layer. I painted the transparent armor opaquely, as if I was just painting normal armor. After that I dropped the opacity of the layer so that you could see the outfit through the armor. Dropping the transparency will allow you to see what is underneath, but it doesn’t look very good. I needed to give it some glow and a few finishing touches.
On a new layer I added some glow to the armor with a soft light layer and a linear dodge (add) layer. After that I created another layer on top and painted in the highlights opaquely. I also painted opaque edges around the armor, kind of like how the edges of a glass bottle look more opaque.
Bing, bang, boom, you have transparent armor.

Creative way of solving that. Nice one, it looks good.
How did you do the little smoke wisps that come off the dark revenant? That’s something I’ve always wanted to do better, but most of the time it ends up looking more like smeared or cloudy brush strokes.
Are you applying some photo reference here and there to paint over, or do you have a different technique? It looks really good however you’ve achieved it.
Thanks! I’m using several different smoke brushes as well as using other brushes like the airbrush, round brush, cloud brush, etc.
Nice use of rule of thirds on the first one. I always struggle with that.
I really love how you handled the transparent armor, beautiful piece :O—
Wow! The first one is good but the second one is incredible, good work
Hell yeah. You’re art is very inspiring.
Wow the level of realism in your art is stunning
